Rafael J.P. Schmitt

Assistant Professor
Environmental Studies Program

Rafael J. P. Schmitt studies the interconnections between river systems and societies, with a special focus on sustainable water infrastructure and the Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem Nexus. His Lab for River System Science and Sustainability (RS³) develops new models to understand river and watershed processes. His work highlights the central role that rivers play in solving global challenges, such as ensuring access to water, energy and food, as well as supporting climate mitigation and adaptation. An additional focus of his research is on the links between catchment processes — such as wildfires and land conservation — rivers and downstream water users. In addition to his research, Schmitt works closely with multi-national organizations, governments and non-profits to guide policy decisions.
