Physics
Michel Devoret studies experimental condensed matter physics, particularly “quantronics” — the study of mesoscopic electronic systems where the collective degrees of freedom, such as currents and voltages, exhibit quantum behavior. He studies quantum non-equilibrium phenomena in superconducting circuits, with applications to quantum information processing, including quantum computation and quantum sensing. He is one of the three scientists to share the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics for demonstrating both quantum mechanical tunneling and quantized energy levels in a system large enough to be held in the hand.
