In Memoriam: Sgt. Tony Borrayo

The award-winning UC Police sergeant had been employed by UC Santa Barbara since 1994.

Funeral services were held on Friday, Jan. 9, for UC Santa Barbara Police Sgt. Jose Antonio “Tony” Borrayo, who passed away on Jan. 4, 2015.

Borrayo joined UCSB in 1994. Prior to becoming a police officer, he worked at the UCSB University Center and in Transportation & Parking Services. Borrayo was born and raised in Santa Barbara and graduated from Dos Pueblos High School before attending Santa Barbara City College.

“Sergeant Borrayo has left an indelible mark on our campus community, and he will be greatly missed,” said Chancellor Henry T. Yang in an email to the UCSB campus. “Sergeant Borrayo was admired and esteemed by his peers throughout Santa Barbara County, as evidenced by the vast array of awards and accolades he wore proudly on his uniform.”

Borrayo received the H. Thomas Guerry Award, Meritorious Unit Citation, Exceptional Service Citation, Police Officer of the Quarter and he earned a Supervisory Certificate from the California Peace Officers Standardized Training (POST).
