After graduating from UC Santa Barbara’s Environmental Studies Program in 1994, Keith pursued a career in journalism, initially writing for The Channels at Santa Barbara City College. He then worked as a news reporter and editor at the Santa Barbara Independent, covering land use, fisheries and agriculture (plus courts, crime and city hall) before hitting the road in 2000 to travel and freelance. In 2004, Chronicle Books published his cultural history of skateboarding, Scarred for Life, which led to writing and producing for Fox Broadcasting Company’s Fuel TV and ESPN’s X Games in Los Angeles. He joined UCSB's Office of Public Affairs & Communications in the fall of 2022.
