In Memoriam: Edward John Kramer

The UCSB professor of chemical engineering and of materials was an authority in the field of block copolymers

Edward John Kramer, professor of chemical engineering and of materials at UCSB, died on Dec. 27. Widely renowned for his research in the field of block copolymers, Kramer joined the faculty in 1997, coming to UCSB from Cornell University, where he was the Samuel B. Eckert Professor of Material Science and Engineering. He received his B.Ch.E. in chemical engineering from Cornell University in 1962 and his Ph.D. in metallurgy and materials science from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1966.

“Dr. Kramer’s scholarly contributions were outstanding and will have lasting impact in the field,” said UCSB Chancellor Henry T. Yang in a message to the campus. “He helped to elevate the stature of our university and our top-ranked materials and chemical engineering departments, and provided exemplary leadership and service to our community in many other ways as well, including twice co-chairing the search advisory committees for our previous and current Dean of Engineering. He was a beloved teacher and mentor, and an admired role model for students and colleagues alike.”

A campus memorial in Kramer’s honor will take place in late spring.
