A public colloquium celebrating the research accomplishments and creative activities of undergraduate students at UC Santa Barbara will be held May 13 from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Corwin Pavilion.
This year's event will be the largest ever, consisting of 110 poster presentations that showcase the discoveries of the undergraduate scholars who will be available to discuss their findings.
Students addressed subjects ranging from the study of Alzheimer's disease to marine phytoplankton to sustainability in city planning.
Students from the fine arts are also well-represented, and original films and artistic projects will also be featured.
"This type of activity is what differentiates an undergraduate education at a research university from that of a liberal arts college or a state college," said Mary Nisbet, associate dean of undergraduate studies in the College of Letters and Science.
"UCSB students have an opportunity to work directly with professors on cutting-edge research and creative endeavors."
To supplement their rigorous coursework, UCSB undergraduates are encouraged to seek research grants to work closely with artists and scholars of international stature.
Last year, the College of Letters and Science awarded a total of $150,000 for this purpose.
Hands-on scholarship, conducted under the supervision of professors who are eminent in their fields, fosters critical thinking skills and helps prepare students for future careers and advanced study.
Overall, more than a quarter of all undergraduates are now involved in organized research at UCSB, often working on teams with graduate students and faculty members in laboratories and centers across the disciplines.
