About 2,600 new and returning University of California, Santa Barbara, students are expected to settle into the residence halls on "Move-in Day," Sunday, September 20, beginning at 9 a.m. The six on-campus residence halls will resemble a massive ant colony as students, including UCSB's freshman class, unload their belongings into their new homes.
Among the activities planned to orient new students before classes begin on Monday, September 28, are tours of
UCSB/Isla Vista on bikes and rollerblades. Workshop topics include using e-mail and other computer lab tools, laundry basics, living with roommates, studying strategies, and writing skills. Chancellor Henry Yang will welcome new students at a reception and ice cream social on the Lagoon Lawn on Wednesday, September 23, from noon to 1:30 p.m.
UCSB received more than 23,000 freshman applications for fall quarter 1998---affirming the campus' stature as a university of choice among high-achieving college applicants. In last month's U.S. News and World Report guide to college and universities, UCSB was ranked 14th among the top national public universities for its undergraduate programs. Approximately 3600 incoming freshmen are expected this fall.
