The U.S. Army gained some new second lieutenants over the weekend, when 11 cadets and new college graduates commissioned out of Surfrider Battalion, UC Santa Barbara's chapter of the Army's Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC). ROTC has been active at UCSB since 1947, predating the campus's incorporation into the UC system. Since that time, more than 1,000 Gauchos have commissioned. In exchange for college scholarships, cadets contract to serve four years of active duty, or eight years in the Army Reserve or National Guard. Congratulations to the latest crop of UCSB-educated Army leaders!
