UC Santa Barbara music students Azeem Ward and Keith Colclough placed first in their divisions at the 2013 Performing Arts Scholarship Foundation (PASF) annual competition in Santa Barbara on April 28.
"On behalf of the entire board of directors for the Performing Arts Scholarship Foundation, I am pleased to announce this year's first-place winners –– instrumental and vocal –– are Azeem Ward, flutist, and Keith Colclough, bass-baritone," said PASF President Deborah Bertling.
A sophomore, Ward is pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree under the guidance of UCSB music professor Jill Felber. He also performs with the University Chamber Orchestra and with the campus's Ensemble for Contemporary Music.
Colclough, a recipient of a Chancellor's Fellowship, is completing both Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees under the direction of music department faculty member Paul Sahuc. He has performed with Opera Santa Barbara, and is also a member of The Opera Lab, an education outreach program that brings opera improvisation to elementary schools in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.
A Student Fulbright Scholar, Colclough studied at the Mannheim Musikhochschule after graduating magna cum laude from Pepperdine University. He made his Los Angeles Philharmonic debut last summer, and has also been a featured soloist with the Santa Barbara Choral Society, the UCSB Orchestra, and the Lompoc Master Chorale.
Established in 1982, the PASF supports vocal and instrumental students in the Santa Barbara area who show promise as professional musicians. Selected by a panel of judges, winners receive $5,000 to be used for career development.
