UC Santa Barbara to Graduate 4,800 Students This Month

Approximately 4,800 graduating students will take part in one of eight official commencement ceremonies scheduled at UC Santa Barbara over eight days starting June 11 and concluding June 18.

The campus's commencement exercises attract an estimated 40,000 visitors to the Santa Barbara area each year.

As is traditional at UCSB, Chancellor Henry T. Yang will shake the hand of each student graduating from the college of Creative Studies, the College of Engineering, the College of Letters and Science, the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, and the Graduate Division.

The College of Creative Studies will launch commencement week on Sunday, June 11, with an 11 a.m. ceremony in Campbell Hall.

Alumna Nancy Anne Harvey, UCSB'74, a board member and former chief executive officer of Tenfold Corporation, will speak.

A reception for the 83 graduates and their guests will follow.

The Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management's graduation ceremony is set for Friday, June 16, at 10 a.m. at Donald Bren Hall.

Deputy Secretary of the Interior Lynn Scarlett, a UCSB alumna, is the guest speaker.

Commencement visitors and participants will have free parking the weekend of Saturday, June 17, and Sunday, June18, when six separate ceremonies will be held on the Faculty Club Green.

Saturday, June 17

9 a.m., Science and Mathematics:

Fred Gluck, former managing partner of McKinsey & Company and trustee of The UCSB Foundation.

1 p.m., Engineering and Science:

William J.Perry, former secretary of defense and current co-director of Stanford University's Preventive Defense Project.

4 p.m., Social Sciences I:

William E. Strickland Jr., president and chief executive officer, Manchester Bidwell Corp.



Sunday, June 18

9 a.m., Social Sciences II:

Wilma P. Mankiller, executive director, former principal chief, Cherokee Nation.

1 p.m., Humanities and Fine Arts:

Elizabeth Gabler, president of Fox 2000 Pictures and a UCSB alumna.

4 p.m., Graduate Division:

Angela Belcher, MIT professor of materials science, holder of a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant, and a UCSB alumna.
