Sustainable Architecture of Bren Hall & Marine Science Building will be Focus of UCSB Affiliates Program

Dusty Rhoads, architect of UC Santa Barbara's Bren Hall and the Marine Science Building, will present a lecture on the design and construction of the two buildings, which are leading examples of sustainable architecture.

The event on the afternoon of Sunday, March 5 is part of a UCSB Affiliates series that showcases new campus buildings.

In addition, representatives of the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management and the Marine Science Institute will explain how the new buildings support the educational and research objectives of the programs they house.

Guided tours will follow.

Bren Hall and the Marine Science Building were designed in tandem by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca using cutting-edge technology with environmentally sound principles, products, and services.

The buildings improve energy efficiency, incorporate extensive use of recycled materials, conserve water, and preserve existing landscape and habitats.

Bren Hall is the only laboratory building in the country to receive the U.S. Green Building Council's Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design accreditation.

It sets the highest standard for sustainable buildings for the future, and is being used as a model for facilities and operations throughout the state.

The University of California has adopted a green building policy for all of its campuses, which represents an extraordinary benchmark and commitment to sustainability.

The cost of the event is $5, which covers parking.
