Panels to Discuss Post-Election Iraq and Palestine at UCSB

Two panels will look at how recent elections in Iraq and Palestine might change the political landscapes in those places during a public forum to be held Friday, February 18 at 1 p.m. at the University of California, Santa Barbara's Embarcadero Hall in Isla Vista.

The first panel will meet at 1 p.m. and will consider "Regional Crisis and the Iraqi Elections." Panelists are:

 

• Chris Toensing, executive director of the Middle East Research and Information Project, and the editor of the "Middle East Report."

 

• Kaveh Ehsani, an editor of the Tehran-based journal "Goft-o-Gu" ("Dialogue"), a research scholar at the University of Illinois -- Chicago, and an associate director of the Jomhur Research Association of Tehran.

• Khalid Medani, an assistant professor of political science at Oberlin College, who has written extensively on Islamist politics and on the privatization of the reconstruction of Iraq.

 

The second panel will meet at about 3:30 p.m. to discuss "Post-Election Palestine." Panelists are:

 

• Richard Falk, Professor Emeritus of International Law and Princeton University and a Distinguished Visiting Faculty Member in UCSB's Global Studies Program.

 

• Lisa Hajjar, an associate professor in UCSB's Law and Society Program.

• Salah Hassan, associate professor of English at Michigan State University.

• Michelle Woodward, photo editor of the Middle East Report and a professional photographer who has worked in Egypt, Jordan, Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza.

 

Following the panel discussions, Falk and Hajjar will be available to sign copies of their latest books.
