Colin Gray, a well-known Santa Barbara artist and teacher with ties to UC Santa Barbara, will discuss the many aspects of public art and some of its controversies in a slide-illustrated lecture on Wednesday, Nov. 17 in Santa Barbara.
In "Art, Public Art, and Architecture:
Designs, Dreams, and Disasters," Gray will describe what constitutes public art, its purpose, and who chooses and pays for it.
He will also look at the spectrum of public reaction to public art and will illustrate his talk, sponsored by the UCSB Affiliates, with many examples.
The lecture will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 21 East Constance Avenue.
It will be preceded by a reception at 7 p.m.
Cost is $15 per person, $10 of which is a tax-deductible contribution to the UCSB Affiliates Scholarship Fund.
Advance registration can be made by calling the UCSB Office of Community Relations at 893-4388.
Colin Gray's work has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States.
He taught sculpture at the College of Creative Studies at UCSB for nine years and has designed several public artworks, three of which have been completed.
