Sergio Martinez, first secretary of the Cuban Interests Section in Washington, D.C. and the second-ranking Cuban diplomat in the United States will speak to the media at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29 in the McCune Conference Room, Room 6020 of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building at UCSB.
Martinez will speak to the media prior to his appearance at a course titled "Global Conflict" taught by Don Gevirtz, former U.S. ambassador to Fiji and a visiting professor in UCSB's Global and International Studies Program, and Mark Juergensmeyer, director of the program and a professor of sociology.
The Martinez lecture is titled "The Cuba of Today and its Bilateral Relations with the United States."
Martinez has served in his present role since 1995. His earlier diplomatic and government posts have included service as political officer in the Cuban Embassy in Mexico, member of the Cuban Mission at the United Nations, and adviser to the foreign relations committee of the Cuban Parliament.
Martinez is the latest of many world leaders to address the Global Conflicts class. Others include: Peter Tarnoff,
